An Edison Diamond C, taped onto a Columbia Viva-Tonal's arm, playing a Diamond Disc - and playing it rather well! Why does it seem to me that this shouldn't work at all? I guess I'm just surprised that there's still tension in the linkage when the C's body is sitting on the weight.

Strange. Sounds like it is dragging a bit during play.

Good lord - I did a similar thing 40 years ago - and with the very same record. It does work, but I don't think it's good for either the stylus or the record - that is quite a lot of weight and the tracking error is fierce. With a proper adapter the disc probably would sound fine on the VivaTonal, I've played diamond discs on a Credenza (using a modified Cheney soundbox) and the sound was fine.
