series numbers of edison diamond disc?

Post by Dustie89 »

I've been told I have a couple of what's referred to as 80,000 series Edison diamond discs. The problem I'm having is determining the series number to be sure. These are not paper labels, but the raised label. There is a large number on the label above "Edison" that is "80471-R". There is a number that appears to be hand inscribed"6684-A-3-12" outside of the label. There is not a number located on the side of the DD. It is labeled "scripture hymn" on one side "23rd psalm". Another scripture and hymn is on the other side, but both sides are by rev. William H Morgan and chorus. The paper sleeve is intact, with the signature "Ray Cummings" located on the summary of the sleeve. These DD are different then what I'm accustomed and info on them would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

80471 is from 1919 and must have sold well as it stayed in the catalog until the end of Edison production in 1929. Edge numbers were discontinued in 1918.

The embossed/engraved labels predate the paper labels. Paper labels started in late 1921.

The 80000 series is a sort of "light classical" series. It was a step up from the 50000 popular series, but not as "classy" as the 82000, 82500, 83000, and 84000 series. As the series number increased, so did the retail price.

6684 is the matrix number. "A" indicates that tis is the first released "take" for that matrix. Edison typically released "takes" A, B, and C, but take letters up to H are not uncommon due to re-recordings of very popular titles.

The paper sleeves are always nice to find, particularly with the descriptive information. Ray Cummings has been discussed elsewhere on the board.

Hope that helps.
