Need help removing Carryola turntable
I have recently acquired a Carryola Model 15 and cannot remove the turntable. It has a screw on top of the spindle that is easily removed. I then expected the turntable to lift off easily but it does not. In fact, I tried as much force as I could without damaging the mounting board. Should it lift off or do I need to do something else? I see no other holes or screws in the shaft. Could it just be seized? How do I safely remove it if it is? Please, does anyone have experience with disassembling Carryolas? All help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Put a piece of wood on the turntable over the spindle and tap gently with a hammer - if it is seized this should loosen it. A little WD40 may liquify any hardened grease holding it.

Re: Need help removing Carryola turntable
It seems permanently attached. The shaft comes through the board into a cone that looks riveted onto the platter with 3 rivets. I removed some of the glued down felt to reveal that they are rivets, no screw heads. Has anyone had experience removing specifically a Carryola platter? Or is there a resource on the web that you could point me towards. If I can't remove the platter, I can't fix the brake or remove the gear box. I'm pretty much stuck at this point.

Re: Need help removing Carryola turntable
I've had no experience with Carryola turntables in particular, but if it's like the majority of turntables, the "cone" is indeed fixed to the platter with rivets. If you cannot see any screws holding the "cone" to the motor shaft (unlikely) and the top of the spindle (above the turntable) doesn't unscrew, then there is no other way it can be fixed. If you follow Estott's instructions, eventually the motor spindle will part company with the cone. It helps if you can get someone else to grip the edges of the turntable, and lift the motor slightly off the work surface, then put a piece of wood on the spindle, and give it a whack with a mallet. It probably hasn't been off since the machine was made, so it might be jammed on real tight. A dribble of penetrating oil left in overnight might help things along.Trynyty wrote:It seems permanently attached. Re: Need help removing Carryola turntable
Is it possible to remove the spindle shaft from the motor, while still attached to the turntable, by possibly removing the any gears, collars, etc. that may be retaining it? Doing so will allow you better access to the shaft and to put something solid behind the turntable hub while you tap on the shaft.
I suspect that the rivets you see simply attach a hub to the turntable. The shaft then fits into the hub, apparently on a taper, ("cone"). I don't believe the rivets actually attach the shaft to the turntable.
