Gramophone or Gramophony
This is on Craigslist, me, being a novice on externals, get confused on whats real or phony. I see so many of the hideous and often hilarious Indian remakes, is this one real?

That item is a so-called "Crapophone". Stay away from it, if you want an original and performing machine.

Re: Gramophone or Gramophony
If you define a "gramophone" as a machine that uses a spring wound motor to play records , usualy played at 78rpm , the sound mechanicaly reproduced and amplified through a horn , then this machine pictured here is , in fact a "gramophone"...just not a very old one...or a very well made one either....but then there is nothing in the definition of a gramophone that deals in condition , or playability.....or age , for that matter...are suitcase portables from the 50's considered gramophones?..I think so..These reproductions are what they are , a passable piece of decoration...it's not the machines that deserve our distain , it's the Craig's List/ antique Mall liars and cheats that try to pass these machines off for what they are not..a true vintage piece of history....For many a beginning collector these are as close to an outside horn machine that they will get for a long time...so , enjoy them for what they are , and know this for certain that in the future therewill be dealers selling aftermarket replacement horns , decals , and reproducers , and in forums like this there will be great debate over the relative attributes of the Mumbai vs the Punjab vs the Wang Fu.......time will level this field

I don't know, there are some antique reproductions of even older things around today that are still worthless. Besides, these Crap-o-phones probably won't even last long enough to become antiques.whoopinola wrote: and know this for certain that in the future therewill be dealers selling aftermarket replacement horns , decals , and reproducers , and in forums like this there will be great debate over the relative attributes of the Mumbai vs the Punjab vs the Wang Fu.......time will level this field

Re: Gramophone or Gramophony
I've never owned one , so I can't speak from experience , but I have ,and still have a few suitcase portables that would similarly be classified as "junk" , and crap..and these aren't even suitable as decoration...yet they have some "value"...when I started collecting , more than a few years ago , if it didn't have an external horn it was almost "worthless" , and if it wasn't a Victor , or Columbia , or Edison , it was worthless.....how the times have changed.....now , don't get me wrong , I'm not praising, or recommending these Indian facsimiles...I'm just saying we should accept them for what they are...warn the novice collector of their true worth....they are the only gramophones made in the last 30 years.....I never met a gramophone I didn't like
