Curious Dataplate
I am starting to clean up my VTLA and was looking at the dataplate when I noticed the VTLA designation is missing. Is it likely a missed punch from the factory or someone cleaning it to vigorously? The serial number is there and matches with the dating certificate/ Victor-victrola.com

Neat! I'd say it just didn't get stamped at the factory.

It's difficult to believe that an unstamped model number on the ID plate would make it past Victor's final inspection. And beyond that, the Victor Talking Machine dealer who sold it.

Has anyone with an early machine noticed if it was stamped or inked on?

I've got a VV-IX where the lid decal is upside down , with nipper standing on his head..if a error like that made it past inspection , and the dealer didn't catch it , then a missed ID plate number isn't a big dealFellowCollector wrote:It's difficult to believe that an unstamped model number on the ID plate would make it past Victor's final inspection. Re: Curious Dataplate
I recall this being discussed in an earlier topic. A dedicated and experienced furniture craftsman could reverse a VV-IX lid (end for end thus making the decal upside down) and completely conceal any evidence of hinge screw holes if he/she wanted or needed to. Replacing an entire side of a VV-IX lid with one from another VV-IX is also not impossible since the sides are pegged and glued to secure them. Why anyone would go to that sort of trouble is difficult to know. I highly doubt that your VV-IX with upside down lid decal passed through the Victor factory inspectors and a Victor dealer unnoticed. In this particular instance, a VTLA is an expensive, high end machine and one would expect Victor's inspection process to be even more meticulous for these and other higher end models. That said, however, anything is possible even with Victor and I sincerely respect your opinion. Now, mistakes on Victor records are another story!whoopinola wrote:I've got a VV-IX where the lid decal is upside down , with nipper standing on his head..if a error like that made it past inspection , and the dealer didn't catch it , then a missed ID plate number isn't a big deal

A dedicated and experienced furniture craftsman wouldn't reverse the lid , he /she would repair and replace it properly...no..there are no signs of repair on this lid , indeed , it could stand screw hole tightening on the lid hinge now....it's a Victor oooops!...and I think that Victor made a bunch of themFellowCollector wrote:I recall this being discussed in an earlier topic. Re: Curious Dataplate
The serial number is 3180 which I guess is pretty early on for this model. Victor-victrola said the dome started around 2500. I guess it was just early enough to slip past. That area does not look scratched so I see no other reason for it to be missing. Good, this machine has been the source of a lot of fun stories for me.
