Post by dilhermandodidi »

Let's go, I recently acquired 1920's early 1930's records of Classical Music. Please identify the year these records. Because I've tried and failed. There is a specific website for this? Thank you!

The approximate release dates of the British records you mention are as follows. The recording dates may be earlier :

Columbia 9134 (1927)
HMV C1416 (1928)
HMV C1543 (1928)
HMV D1783-4 (1930)
HMV DB1090 (1927)

I cannot help with HMV EH52 or EJ493-5 which are German issues. Perhaps one of our German members knows the dates.

My dating guide is a publication entitled "DATES:Date All Those English Seventy-eights" which is probably long out of print.

HMV DB.1090:
"Minuet, op. 14, no. 1" is Victor mx. CVE-19783, recorded in New York City on 20 May 1926.
"Sonata in C Sharp Minor" is Victor mx. CVE-37140, recorded in New York City on 16 Dec. 1926.

HMV EH.52:
"Dichter und Bauer, Ouvertüre, 1 Teil" -- mx. CWR381-1 [triangle], recorded in Berlin on 1 Mar. 1927.
"Dichter und Bauer, Ouvertüre, 2 Teil" -- mx. CWR382-2 [triangle], same place and date.

HMV EJ.230:
"Judas Makkabäus: Seht, er kommt mit Preis gekrönt" -- mx. CWR1354-2 [triangle], recorded in Berlin on 18 Nov. 1927*
"Samson: Trauermarsch" & "Judas Maccabäus: Marsch" -- mx. CLR3792-2 [triangle], recorded in Berlin on 25 Jan. 1928

HMV EJ.493: both sides 18 Oct. 1929
HMV EJ.494: both sides 22 Oct. 1929
HMV EJ.495: both sides 18 Oct. 1929

*The CHARM database also gives 1 Nov. 1927 as a date for this side. The EH and EJ numbers would have been pressed on the Electrola label originally.

These are just what I've found so far; if I feel intrepid enough, I can try for the rest. Providing the performers' names and the matrix numbers (either on the labels or pressed into the run-out area) will greatly facilitate looking up the recording dates for the other discs.

Thank you so much! Where do you find such information?
Soon I'll post in you tube. Thanks for the tips!

Victor masters (searchable by matrix, catalogue number, etc.) from May 1900 through June 1930 are found at
http://victor.library.ucsb.edu/

For material recorded by the Gramophone Company (HMV), the primary source is
http://www.charm.rhul.ac.uk/index.html
One of the bases for its information is the discographical work done by Alan Kelly and published in several volumes. His work covers Gramophone Co. material from 1898 through 1929. Using CHARM requires a bit of trial-and-error practice; the best results come from using the advanced search page:
http://www.charm.rhul.ac.uk/discography ... anced.html

The EDVR so far has not gone past June 1930, although there are plans to cover further decades. For Gramophone Company masters after 1929, one would have to consult individual discographies of artists or genres until/unless someone decides to finish the company's catalogue from the 78 era.
