J.C. Thomas - Acetate - Song of the Open Road (1943)

Post by operabass78s »

From a pile of home recordings I found in the basement of an estate sale a few years back. John Charles Thomas sings "Song of the Open Road" from a broadcast on October 17, 1943

For some reason records of this fine singer are rarely found in the UK, despite the fact that he performed in Europe, notably with the Brussels Opera.

Were his Victor recordings never issued over here on the HMV label? I have never seen one, or any of his earlier Brunswicks or Vocalions.

Now that you mention this, I've never seen an HMV J.C. Thomas either and I certainly have my share of HMV pressings of other US Victor recordings. Has anyone else ever seen any?

I've always been a fan of Thomas, his records from the earliest acoustics right up to his last recordings all bear a strong, steady and powerful voice. Look no further than "There Is No Death for an axmaple of his ability as a serious, great singer with some serious power. For a bit of fun, check out "The Green Eyed Dragon", clearly he enjoyed what he was doing and I enjoy listening to his records!

Thank you so much for posting the found file! It's such a great pleasure to be able to hear (and share) a great recording, rather than just post a photo of the record label.
