VE120 Impulse Purchase

It's not oak, and I told myself "no more mahogany", but this machine has been on & off CL for months & getting ever cheaper. When it dropped to $75, my Hoarder Gene took charge of my fingers & sent email to the guy. He called me at 5:30pm, and at 6:30 we were hefting it into my vehicle! Now I need to find a key, so I can see what all those records are! I didn't ask him, but it must be solidly stuffed with albums - nothing shifted or made any noise when we tipped it back to slide into the car.



Anyone have a pic of the correct key?

ps - I paid him $80, saying the extra $5 was a tip for helping to load. hehe

Nice. I have a soft spot for XVI / 120s, although I don't have any 120s, I have six VTLA / XVIs, all different in one way or another, either a different finish, cabinet style, electric, crank, well, you get the idea

Anyway, they all use the standard "V" key, including your 120.

You saw right through my little ruse....But the real point to be made is that there are gramophones in risk of being reduced to craft projects , or parts , or fire wood....And they're not all as desireable as a VE-120. ....so , Do it!!...Do it today!!...Be a star , and save a STARR

I like to rescue the little orphans myself, when I can find them and reasonably expect I'm able to... especially since I'm not in the high roller category that would allow me to play in the big leagues (my apologies for the terrible mixing of metaphors).

Ah, but eventually you find yourself with so many orphans that you can't get into your storage anymore without a physical challenge. Don't believe me? Take a look in my garage or my storage building. I'm not going to mention the sad state of my back room at the moment, suffice it to say, I have a path and that's about it! And just when I'm able to get a few things moved along to new homes, MORE find me.

har har! Welcome to Western New York, Land of a Thousand Indian Names. Tonawanda, Cheektowaga, Lackawanna, Scajaquada, Chautauqua, Gowanda, West Seneca (no East Seneca, though), Niagara, Tuscarora, etc etc etc.

Anyway - we mostly rolled it (thank you, Feltoid Casters) from his finished garage about 20 feet to my Caravan, then we tipped it back onto the edge of the car floor & slid it in with the aid of an old blanket underneath. Lifting was impossible - we barely got it over a 1 inch high threshold! It's gonna live in my vehicle until I can get the records out!
This is like "Do Not Open until Xmas" - what goodies are inside? It's Granny's collection from the early 1920s, so prolly some Caruso, John McCormack, Alma Gluck, Hawaiian, Joseph C. Smith, coupla Sacred records, and I betcha Paul Whiteman's "WHISPERING" ! I'll die if it turns out she was a Jazz fiend.

ps: On my way to work this evening, the caravan "felt" really weird when trying to accelerate.... "What's wrong with this thing?!" .... "oh, I forgot. "

Here I must leap to the defense of my state and point out that "Lackawanna," like several other place names that crop up elsewhere (e.g., Wyoming, Mahoning, Indiana, as well as anomalies like Philadelphia, NY---yes, there is one!---and New Philadelphia, OH), originated in territory that was, or would become, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The name of the Lackawanna River, which runs through Scranton, was appropriated by the Scranton brothers for their iron works, which operation was subsequently moved to the Buffalo, NY area (proximity to ore shipping on the Great Lakes) and later came under Bethlehem Steel ownership. I was told that "Lackawanna" means "river with many bends." "Wyoming" means "broad meadows"; the Wyoming Valley includes Wilkes-Barre, which like Scranton is situated in the Northern Anthracite field. The Mahoning Valley is in Carbon County, PA, but the name is also found in Ohio.
