TRIUMPH PROBLEM

Hi, Can anyone help.
I've got a bit of a problem with my Triumph.
I can't quite get it up to speed, it runs smoothly and keeps a steady speed but it's too slow.
All the top running gear is free and I know it's not the half nut or the belt. It looks to me as if the governor disc is too close to the brake pad but if I move it away from the brake pad to get more speed the brake doesn't work.
I would be very greatful for any sugestions.

There is a screw on the governor assembly that allows the governor to be moved on the governor shaft. You could loosen the screw and move the assembly away from the brass wheel. You probably need to move it slightly. You can accomplish the same things be moving the pins at each end of the governor.

Note!!!!! Before attempting this type of work, be sure the motor is run completely down.

Make sure the screw to the on off lever is tight on the spring, also check the leather contact point that contacts the brass disc, the governor may also need to be taken apart and cleaned and the shaft polished. I just had this problem on my machine, and I went through all these steps, it did not want to shut off. The little shoe for the governor is held in place just by the upward force of the leaf spring, it rocks on a little indentation on the shoe and a cone on the motor frame, if it is out of place can cause trouble. This motor was designed in late 1894-1895, and while it is the best of the best, the governor arrangement I do not like as well as the Home with 2 contact pads on the governor. I hope this helps.

Hi Jerry and Shawn good to hear from you,
yes I've tried all of what you have mentioned and when I move the governor assembly (eg. the disc away from the brake pad) it still doesn't reach correct speed, and then the brake to stop the motor doesn't work.
The governor disc is travelling as far as it can.
The brake pad is about half worn. It really is getting to me as I've spent so much time doing the Triumph up.
The only thing I can think of is I bought new governor weights from Wyatts have I got the right ones?.
If you have any other idea's I would be grateful.

Gordon,

I had an issue with my Triumph where the motor would slow down. It turned out to be a gear in the lower assembly that did not have any free play and was binding.

Hi guy's,
I said I would let you know how I got on with the speed problem I had.
Well it was the governor weights, I bought new one's from Wyatts and they sent me the wrong size, I had two of the old one's and checked their weight which was 17 grams and the new one's weighed 22 grams.
As I had two old weights I only needed one more so I shaved a Fireside weight down to 17 grams and problem solved.
