Oh, I'm surprised it fetched that much with that description. The range of prices on eBay often surprises me!

I have a really early 102 with a No.16 sound box and it sounds fine. I think it's fractionally quieter than a 5B, or maybe it just has a slightly different tone. Either way, it sounds good. I tend to play all my decent condition non-duplicate 78s electrically, but a No.16 will cope with most records. Any gramophone will chew up really late/loud 78s very quickly.

Can you wind 102s by spining the turntable backwards, or will that wreck something? Not as a permanent solution (it would be a nuisance) but as a test?

Yes, you can. I had a 101 when I was a kid, (same spring), and it had no handle, so I spent hours winding the turntable backwards! It can't do any harm, I suppose, but I would recommend putting a record on the turntable or you might end up with a few nasty marks on the turntable felt.

The 102 mentioned above did indeed fetch a good price, considering that as well as the missing handle, the lid stay and the turntable circlip are also missing, and the turntable felt has lifted. and will be almost impossible to stick down again so that a perfect circle is formed.

I see that the detachable record tray is also missing, as they very often are, but anyone new to 102's might not know what those pegs on the motor board were for. Whilst not essential to the machine, the tray's presence or absence should always be reflected in the price you pay.

If the turntable cloth is carefully ironed it should be possible to re-attach it successfully using an impact adhesive such as UHU, sparingly applied so that it does not soak through. Then pile on a few records to keep it flat whilst drying, and all should be well.

Wow thanks for all the helpful replies, yes Capt Bob twas that one, and yep it is a bit of a mess, but I got carried away!! Now for my next question as it does appear to have spent many a year in an attic I reckon it will need a service at some stage (that is if it is working when I get a handle, but will try the anti clockwise ting first!!!) I would ideally like to find someone in London that does servicing and repairs, as obviously that would make life easier for me, is there anyone? I am in South East London by the way. AS to sellers on ebay in the UK who offer parts for Gramophones , I have noticed a seller whose ID is redfruitseller --- often has spare parts for grams and phonographs -- said seller had a No 16 soundbox offered a couple of weeks back , also a winding crank for HMV gram but I can't remember which model it was for . Best of luck with your purchase !

Hi Rosie

Don't panic about the No. 16 soundbox. IMHO, it gets unnecessarily bad press. I have two and they both play superbly, better than some 5a's I have. The only problem you might have is if your example rattles or buzzes. Taking these apart and re-assembling them is very tricky.

I doubt Rosie will have much luck with a leather winding handle!

On the subject of gluing turntable felt I simply use a fine coat of white (PVA) water based glue and nothing heavy with solvents. This dampens the felt slightly and allows for stretching and flattening out of any creases without the need for an iron or anything else potentially dangerous.
