Edisonia Ltd, Salesman Case?

Post by zapper »

Not sure where to post this.
Can anyone help with my interest in this case. The outside is covered with a black rexine? and has metal protective corner plates. Inside the lid is finished with a dark blue padded velvet, I assume to keep the cylinders firmly on the tubes. I guess the other area took a machine? Can any one post a picture or any information about the company. The case unfortunately is missing part of the catch.

Edisonia Limited was formed on 15th June 1897 to acquire James Hough's London Phonograph Company, which had recently obtained a licence from the Edison Bell Corporation.

Edisonia was the first legitimate phonograph business to operate in the UK, and to sell phonographs for domestic use.

Under Hough's control, Edison Bell made their own machines in the UK from about 1904, and were eventually taken over by Decca in 1933.

This is a very complicated subject explored in great detail by Frank Andrews in his book "The Edison Phonograph : The British Connection" (CLPGS Publications 1986).

For some years the National Phonograph Co.Ltd were the authorised Edison distributors in the UK, but from 1st August 1912 they and the Edison Manufacturing Co.Ltd began operating as Thomas A.Edison Ltd.

Here is the official announcement :

I have the book. Mr. Andrews collected many details, but as he almost never cited his sources, the book is of only limited use for serious research. Not mentioning the sources is a weak point in many of his articles. Obviously, Mr. Andrews had access to early trade papers, like The Talking Machine News or the Phono Trader and took much information from it, for example financial figures (for which Mr. Andrews is notoriously famous).

Hello Zapper,
What a super find!! I have always wanted to find one of these Exhibitors kits. All you need now is the Graphophone and some early cylinders and you will have a fantastic display piece great for demonstrating to the public.
