New invention: WAX cylinders

Post by Operafan »

Has anyone tried what this fellow is making?

http://cgi.ebay.com/Phonograph-Phonogra ... 7C294%3A50

He claims they are made with candle wax, record easily, but, no surprise, don't last too many plays. Can anyone verify that they play back at all?

He would do better getting hold of as many mouldy, chipped, warped, played out 2 min wax cylinders as possible. Mashng them all up and melting the result to make them into more durable "new" clinders. They would have the extra chache of being made to the original Edison wax formula :D

Unless you would do it under open skies I would not melt down old wax records. Many of them have lead as an additive the composition. Can't be too healthy to inhale. ;)

Anyway, this candle record is weird. At least you can burn it after playing!

Yes Norman, you really wouldn't want to cook that lot up in your kitchen

Bu seriously I would have been surprised if making cylinders from such a soft material would even last one playing.

Well I have been playing around with this cylinder since it arrived, and I have to say I like it a lot. It plays back nicely a few times (more like 3-4 than 10, though) and is great for an easy demo of recording, at least for voice.
