I recently bought this machine from an 86 yr old man, it belonged to his uncle who brought it back with him from the US at the end of the twenties, the swedish immigrant proudly coming back home maybe! I'm really happy about it, plays well - but the tonearm does'nt move as freely as one would expect. Could there have been ballbearings underneath it to lessen the friction? As is now it's just metal against metal. I've tried oil and grease but there's no improvement.
Anyone out there with suggestions? This is my only american machine! Håkan

You are quite right that there ought to be ball bearings; there should also be an indented steel ring which acts as a ball bearing race. I may have both on hand, and would be glad to send your what you need if I do, if you are unable to find the bearings and race in Sweden. If you find what you need, the only additional trick is to pack the whole thing with grease both as a lubricant and as a seal. It's a very easy job.
I have many happy memories of Sweden & Swedish friends - I even worked for the Swedish Ski Team at the Salt Lake Olympics; I really need to get back there at some point!

Thanks! That would be great! I thought as much, it looked too primitive a setup compared to the rest of the machine. There's no way I'm going to find either the ring or the ballbearings in Sweden - Victor is seldom found - this is the only machine of this kind I've ever seen there, His Masters Voice machines yes, but I've never seen one with this kind of an arm. As you obviously know It IS a small country very close to the pole circle and although there are a few people who are interested there is no forum or anything of the kind, dealers etc. I'd be really greatful! How do I contact you or shall I leave my mail here?
Did you see any interesting gramophones when there? greetings Håkan
