Grafonola Hinge Support puzzle

Unlike the simple Victrola lid hinges, I am a little perplexed when I removed this hinge support from a Grafonola 75 because it wasnt sliding easy. The bottom piece was mounted on a block of wood which wasnt original and pushing the lid down caused the bar to flex. Is this the stock piece?

If I recall, the Grafonola lid support should not have that. You lift the lid and the rod slips into the locked position. You raise the lid a bit more and it slips out of the lock and you can lower it. It looks as if someone has improvised a friction clutch. The proper parts should be easy to find.
