I simply can not bring myself to throw away any old 78. Although I do not deliberately buy them, when I do obtain 1940s and 1950s 78s in a batch of records I buy, they go into a cardboard box and up in the stable hay loft in the eaves where the hay bales don't fit. I figure those records made people sing and dance and made them happy in their time, and I can not --dare not-- destroy them. I have numerous boxes in the stable labeled "save till antique" where many outdated things go: typewriters, computers, and slide rules, for example. And also later 78s. It's dry up there and the hay keeps the temperatures somewhat in check. Some subsequent generation may be delighted to find this stuff.
I also agree with "briankeith" that classical recordings are a delight. I find that my Victor V plays them (accoustical ones at least) with gusto, filling my living room with wonderful sounds, far more entertaining and relaxing than the usual offerings so popluar with collectors today such as Uncle Josh, Billy Murray, and minstrel or coon songs. Years ago I bought a huge Pooley cabinet with 550 Victor Red Seals, all from the so-called golden age of opera. I soon picked up a copy of Victor Book of the Opera and have had many an enjoyable snowing evening with my records, my book, and my phonograph.
I vote emphatically with saving all those later 78s or giving them to someone who will save them.
John

I bought a box of 100 records at an auction. I was only interested in the sleeves. A lot of the records I have absolutely no interest in. So, if you're ever in the Toronto area, I have about 40 batwing Whitemans you can have, including the What'll I Do you are looking for.Player-Tone wrote:I am still new to this hobby and currently have a humble collection of 78s, you can send your unwanted pre-1930 78s my way!

Thanks, I will keep that in mind. Have you considered shipping them? I will buy them off you if you are willing to ship!Torjazzer wrote:I bought a box of 100 records at an auction. I fear that the cost of shipping them from Canada will be more than they are actually worth. But I could check into it.Player-Tone wrote:Thanks, I will keep that in mind. I admit I really like Benny Goodman on Red Columbia, Country 78s, Glenn Miller and Andrew Sisters, and thats it, usually pay under $ 2.00 each.

Living in a house with a footprint of 40 square metres doesn't leave a lot of room for a record collection. I've bought several job lots on ebay, the biggest of which was 600 records. It took me a few months to play them, take what I wanted and put the rest on ebay in lots of around 100 for 99p. Most of the lots received bids of 99p, which was fine by me.
I'm new to the hobby I do play everything I buy. I keep the records that appeal to me irrespecitive of what they are or their condition. It helps that I like things that other people aren't interested in, like folk tunes. It's very interesting to see the way these were played changing over the years. Old instrumental music also interests me. I thought I'd be interested in classical records, that's my background, but I dislike the way long pieces are split up by changing sides, you listen, get involved in the music only to have the spell broken by the automatic brake cutting in - or not.
It doesn't help that I live in a very small house. It has a footprint of only 40 square metres, with a conservatory. The majority of my collection is stored in boxes in the loft, all in categories. I need to get some IKEA expedit shelving, to replace the book cases I have in the second bedroom. The downside is that they contain my collection of around 1,000 LPs, many of which really need to go to the charity shop.
