As a temporary measure you might be able to tie the leather to the remaining brake with wire.

I've noticed by searching e-bay, it looks like the sewing machine belt is the way to go, but it comes in a variety of sizes (3/16, 5/16, ¼,etc) anybody know which size would work the best?
