That happened when Zonophone applied rear mount brackets to cases designed for front mounts.

But is it actually a Zonophone or is it a clone? The previous owner who had it told me it was of German origin, but as what usually happens is misinformation gets passed on until it becomes "fact".

You're right, I wasn't being very precise there- what I meant to say was that Zonophone put out some machines like this during their transition from front mount to back mount. I think this might be a similar case- some German maker using up a stock of old parts

Raphael, do you have additional pics of this machine I see they are no longer on ebay - particularly the motor. on either the left or right side is there evidence of 2 small nail holes where a makers plaque could have been attached?

Sorry, meant to get back sooner on this. Odeon would be more appropriate as the manufacturer.

I have a Columbia disc graphophone, an early BJ Imperial, with the wind on the left. While it is a rear-mount machine, I believe Columbia was using-up front-mount mechanicals.
After so many years of winding Victrolas and Edisons on the right, it feels strange to wind this Columbia on the left.

Interesting: usually, when it comes to factory conversions, they would reverse the cabinet, and mount the back bracket on the former front.
The tone arm certainly doesn't look like a Zonophone, nor the back bracket (although I confess I am inferring from American models - is the motor typical of European Zonophones?): perhaps some Continental maker's attempt to get rid of old stock?
