Case Crushing Cranes!

I have noticed that most of the aftermarket cranes that clamp to the case will leave scratches and dents. Did those originally have some sort of padding to protect the cases when new?

Hi Dave,

I don't know the answer to your question but, since that has never stopped me before, I'll answer anyway. I usually pad the contact surfaces of the crane with either felt or leather. I suspect they were so equipped when new but don't know for sure.

I believe Jerry Van is right in thinking that many horn cranes were originally equipped with pads to avoid damaging the phonograph's cabinet. I've seen original pads on a few cranes. And for those that don't have them, I add them! (The originals I've seen have been made of brown felt, but any pad is better than nothing. )

Sorry if I seem dense, but what kind of felt? That thin stuff from fabric stores would not offer much protection, would it?

Well, here are a couple of shots of original felt as found on a Tea Tray Company crane. (I have similar original felt on a Hawthorne & Sheble crane too.) It doesn't look awfully thick, but certainly more robust than the stuff that comes in rolls. I think that self-adhesive felt pads, properly trimmed, do a nice job.
