Riveted Spring Barrel - Late Victors

Post by Victrolacollector »

I can't seem to find the thread, but as many of us know some of the spring barrels in VV 2-55 etc. were riveted. One of our fellow collectors actually removed the rivets and used small screws and nuts to fasten the barrel.

I am trying to find out the proper size and length of the screws used.
Having thump and bump so time to lubricate the spring.

I drill them out and re[place them with nuts & bolts. Simply take the drum or the cover plate to the hardware store and see what fits. I used the shortest possible bolts, and did not use lock washers, which might have been a good idea. It's actually a very simple operation. It wouldn't be hard to use rivets, either - same sizing procedure, but the nut & bolt system allows for subsequent removal without having to drill.

While a nut and bolt would work, suppliers like George Vollema sell barrel rivets that you install by peening over the outside end. I would like the look of that better, wouldn't you?

I have made them myself on the lathe and turn it with a shoulder to allow clearance for the spring and to give some backing to peen the end down onto.
