"Do these Columbias have the axel that runs through the spring barrels to connect them?"

I am betting they do. It looks to me like the springs in three barrels are strung in series on a common axle, and that the two clusters of springs are acting in parallel for heavy torque to move the mass of those Concert cylinders. Columbia used similar motor designs for both cylinder and disk machines in those early years.
