Columbia cylinder record boxes variations

Post by max_phenol »

Hi,

I would like to find out how many different variations exist of the Columbia brown wax and Gold Moulded cylinder record boxes. There are some sources for the variations on Edison boxes, but obviously none on this topic.

So, I will start with some photos of my own labels and lids (please check if these are the correct ones to that type of label!) and hopefully many more collectors will add photos and/or information on the variations later on.

For the moment I am just investigating on US releases, while of course there were also variations of Columbia boxes that were sold in Europe. But let's just focus on the American ones.

Thanks,
Helmut

That's my oldest Columbia box label. I know that there is at least one earlier version where Paris is not listed.

The following design with much larger woman image. That's the one with the typing error - the front decal on machine reads "GRAPHAPHONE" instead "GRAPHOPHONE".

Some more cities were added and the typing error was corrected.

The first design in yellow and blue colours. The woman is slightly larger again ... and a few more cities were added.

Same design as the previous but almost twice as many cities were listed.

The final design in slightly darker colours and the woman a bit smaller now. The same cities are listed as on the previous one. That's the first one I have with patent dates on.

The final one in my collection has twice as many cities listed as the previous and also the box with that listing moved from the right to the left side of the label.

Isn't there anybody who can help me with this?

Please check your Columbia cylinder record boxes and let me know if you find any variations that I don't have listed above! Many thanks!

If you can't take a photo or scan of it, just describe what the difference is!

I did not see this thread earlier. This is the best chronology of Columbia labels I've seen. Don't think I have any not represented here!

These photos are wonderful. I don't think I have any boxes that have any labels not shown here, but I will check this evening.

Jim.
