Has anyone ever been paid with an E-Check or does anyone know anything about them??

An "e-check" is simply a buzz word for an electronic debit against your checking account. For example, if you use Pay Pal and have Pay Pal take that payment directly out of your checking account (rather that charging it to a credit card), that pops up on your Pay Pal account as an e-check payment. It accomplishes the same thing as using a debit card.

This story from last year was the last straw for me when it comes to giving PayPal the benefit of the doubt:

To be fair, this kind of thing could result in there being a hell of a lot fewer crap-o-phones in the world. (Just kidding! -- any action even remotely like this should be of major concern to those of us dealing with antique phonographs. It isn't PayPal's job to order the destruction of anything.)

This has a bit of an urban legend smell to it.

Well, it's true that there doesn't appear to be anything on Snopes about it either way

and much of what was posted at the time is on blogs and forums, with little real journalism involved. But some of the discussions that came about in the wake of this report involved other stories about PayPal that -- well, as I said, the benefit of the doubt. I'm just not inclined to give it to PayPal.

Well, I paid my son's University bill via e-check. You pretty much type the amount, your bank account number and routing info into their payment web page, and by submitting it you agree to the payment. I've also done the same over the phone when I forgot my car payment.

Since you are on the receiving side I am not exactly sure how that would work. If it requires you to give him your account info so that he can send money from his bank I would be concerned. Aside from speeding up the transaction I cannot see why he would not send you a personal check, you cash it and then send the item.

I've also been using Paypal since it's inception, long before it was bought by eBay. I also never had problems with them, though I must admit I am mostly on the buyer end of the transaction. I initiated two disputes in all these years, one where the seller didn't respond after payment, the other when a Edison Standard arrived in pieces, because shipped without padding. In both cases I had to submit proof for my claim and eBay/Paypal mediated between the seller and myself until the issue was resolved. Of course, could be just my luck and being honest and open. Still, I would prefer Paypal over most other methods of payment.

When buying an item out of state that is small enough to ship though UPS Store, to avoid not receiving the item and losing my payment, I send it to the UPS store that I plan to have it shipped from, the seller delivers the item to them and the store turns over my Bank Check in which the seller can call to verify it's authenticity. All the UPS stores I've done this through had no problem doing this for me. Most sellers are glad to take the item to the UPS store and avoid having to pack it up for shipment and I'm not heart broken when it arrives broken from lack of proper packing.
