Several rarer titles up on ebay including BA #5713 My Sin

Post by EdisonCylinder223 »

Hello guys and gals. I recently came across a large lot of Edison cylinders at an auction a few weeks back. At the time of purchase I did not know what they were, but I tend to follow the advice of American Pickers: when you see something unusual, the time to buy it is now! So, I got this lot very cheap, all told, and brought them home to do due diligence and find out what I had. After doing an internet crash course, I pulled out some of the better ones and listed them on Ebay. I was amazed at how quickly they received bids and I realized I was on to something very fascinating. Fast forward a couple of weeks and I found another auction a couple of hours from me and the listing mentioned an Edison Phonograph player and cylinders. So I trecked off into the cold Saturday morning and sure enough they had a player and about 80 cylinders. I was able to purchase that lot, with the player, and now my curiosity was in full swing. I had gone from never hearing of these incredible items to owning 250 and a player in two weeks! Amazing! I also should mention that no one in my immediate family had any knowledge of their existence going from my mom to my grandmother, who is in her late 70's, nor my grandmothers across-the-street neighbor (also in her 70's). Anyhow, the last lot I purchased had several rarer titles numbering above #5400 including #5713 My Sin Fox Trot by The Golden Gate Orchestra (and which I found out was the 7th to last cylinder ever pressed and the last by Golden Gate Orchestra). I am generally a reseller of things, so I listed these items on Sunday on Ebay and was absolutely amazed at the craze over My Sin. I didn't realize it would be that sought after! Anyway, just thought I would let it be known that it is currently up for bidding on Ebay along with 15 other cylinders with serial numbers #5400 or greater! Thanks for reading and now you have a 32 year old hooked as I am currently awaiting to get my player repaired and to start listening to these incredible records!!

5713 was part of the June 1929 cylinder release, the last cylinders ever released by Edison, or anyone else for that matter (not counting "new" companies like Electrophone, Vulcan, etc.) Only 100 copies of each title were scheduled for pressing, and in most cases, significantly fewer were actually made. In this case 109 copies were pressed of the original record, according to the stock card shown in Ron Dethlefson's "Blue Amberol Recordings 1915-1929".

5713 has actually been re-released by Berlin Phonograph Works and can be heard on Youtube. It's not as jazzy as most Golden Gate Orch. selections, but it's still very desirable due to the extremely small quantity pressed and the late release date.

Who bought all his records, Warren Buffet or Bill Gates? The prices were nuts.

I must admit; I was completely blown away by the prices the cylinders received! I knew I had some rare finds, but the prices at the end were staggering. I should graph them all from the early morning to ending prices; it would be an interesting show. One person bought the majority of them and actually lives within driving distance. I will be meeting him halfway to deliver them in person and will get to talk to him about his collection. I met another fella who is working on my player, so I will get to introduce these two collectors to each other and then they can share their knowledge and stories with one another and maybe strike up a trade or two as well. I should mention, if anyone might be interested, I have another copy of #5623 Where Were You - Where Was I? Fox Trot by B.A. Rolfe in similar condition to the one that sold. I will also be cataloging the rest of the collection I acquired if anyone would like to see (of course, they will likely be more common titles, though still a few in the low 5000's. I did tell the Big Buyer that he has first shot at the list, so I can post it or email it once he has perused it). Thanks to all who offered advice and who looked at the listings. It's been a blast!
