Edison Diamond Disc 10 page record Albums

Post by CDBPDX »

Just brought home a small group of Diamond Disc records and found 2 - 10 page Edison record albums in one of the boxes. These are fairly ornate and were probably very attractive before the gold wore off.

I haven't seen any albums like this before, or any albums at all by Edison for Diamond Disc records. Were they standard equipment for certain Edison phonographs, like the Victor albums? Or could you go in to an Edison dealer and buy these all day long?

I think they're very cool!

These were used at least in the C-1 and C-2 radio / phono combos.

And, interestingly enough, they were also available in a 12-inch size. Just how many 12-inch Diamond Discs would you have?

The Edison Company's attitude toward 12-inch record storage was puzzling, in my opinion. As far as I know none of the acoustic phonograph cabinets were designed to hold them. I don't know if there were any consumer-released 12-inch standard diamond discs. There were, of course the dealer sampler records but these were meant to be returned and never sold. The long-play phonographs could handle the few 12-inch LP discs that were made, but couldn't store them! The C1 and C2 radio-phonographs had the larger albums, but since they could only play standard Diamond Discs and needle-cut records, the albums would normally only be used for those back in the day.
Given the thickness and weight of the Diamond Discs, it's a wonder any of the albums have survived. The ones in good condition probably were never used in the first place.

This statement is incorrect. I believe the "New Edison" long-play consoles of 1926 (models 1-C, 2-C, 3-C, and was there a 4-C?) can all fit the 12-inch discs in their cabinets. This is individually, of course, as they have slats, so they could not accommodate a binder. A number of standard Diamond Disc machines also have clearance for 12" discs in their cabinets, such as the Baby Console and the Edisonics, like the Schubert.

The bottom drawer of the A250 would accomodate 12 inch discs even though there were none commercially offered before the long play era.

By heck, you're absolutely right!
Next time I'll take the trouble to check these things out with what I have! Here's a couple in a BC34:

Thanks for setting me straight! :D

I got this album from a forum member about 2 years ago. I have not idea what machine it would have come from, but it is definitely made for 10 inch diamond discs. It is much less ornate than Cliff's and that leads me to believe it to be earlier-but I could be wrong. Any ideas what machine these came with?

Didn't Edison offer albums for the A-100, since it did not have any record storage? What did those look like?

Thanks

I had two albums like these last shown and parted with them quite some time back. I rather wondered if perhaps they might have been produced by someone other than edison like so many of the standard albums. You don't see many which makes me think they didn't come with most machines, in fact most edisons untill very late didn't seem to have a place you could put an album.
