How do you remove a polyurethane finish?

Post by Jerry B. »

I am attempting to refinish a cabinet and my stripper is not touching the finish. I suspect it is a modern polyurethane finish. Any suggestions? Thanks, Jerry Blais

Hi Jerry,
Does the stripper you normally use contain methleyne chloride? That will take the poly off. I think it causes cancer in California, but you live in Oregon, so you should be safe...

My stripper is working but not very well. I'm not very patient and the garage is cold. I'm sure the stripper would work better if it was a bit warmer. Jerry

Causes cancer in California but safe in Oregon. As an environment engineer I find that hilarious. Good one Dave!

I know I'm a little late to the ballgame here, but I've used Klean Strip KS-3 to remove poly. However, it takes a lot of it and a lot of scraping with a plastic putty knife. I've also used it to strip off what looked like spar varnish from a door inside my house.

I've never understood why anyone would use poly to refinish a piece of old furniture

But it works great on boat oars and canoe paddles! :P
