What clips in the clip ?

Post by uberanalog »

Just can't figure this out. I'm a 66 year old newbie to acoustic machines. I've been repairing and enjoying tube record players for over 50 years, but this is all new to me. I recently acquired the humble VV 4 - 3 consolette.
It sounds great. I use it for playing early electrics. I'm really enjoying it. BUT ... there is this bracket on the motorboard that is making me crazy 'cause I do not know why it is there. On the top right side of the motorboard is one round well with a needle cup in it. Just below that is a black, rectangular metal thingy. It has a finger like, punched out, clip on either side and an indentation in the center. Wazzit there for ? I have a couple of portable machines with a large version for holding the crank, but this is much too small for that. I can't find a picture of it on the net. I feel like I should be able to intuit this but I just don't get it. I know Victor wouldn't have spent the money to include it if they didn't think it was necessary or a selling point. Thanks for keeping me sane by filling me in.

A picture would help but, could it be a needle tin holder?

...And putting the needle tins in those clips will scratch them! :(

Thanks for the response. I'll have to buy a period Tungstone box and clip it in there.

I should have been more precise. Inserting a needle tin won't hurt the clip. The paint on the needle tin will, however, eventually become scratched. If you have one or two that are already scratched, they'd be perfect to use! :)
