Very true. Australian HMVs seem to be made with very fine quality (and quiet) shellac, quite unlike the distressingly sizzle-prone product that came out of Hayes from the late 20's onward. Indian pressings sometimes seem to be exceptionally good too. Presumably the lower cost of shipping for the shellac itself contributed.Viva-Tonal wrote:One thing I think would be sought after is Australian pressings of many things, as they made quality laminated Columbia-style pressings of (among others) HMV and Decca recordings for many years.

I have also found that pressings from HMV's Calcutta factory often have quieter surfaces than those from Hayes.
My late father, who was an analytical chemist, believed that British HMV pressings contained a higher proportion of abrasive in the mix. This may have improved their resistance to wear, but to the detriment of listening pleasure.
He also remembered (he would have been 100 this year) that during the inter-war period some people would only buy Columbia records because of their comparatively silent surfaces.

Found that Australian one. It's a Brunswick. Also found a hmv from England still in original store envelope.
