Played on a ca. 1927 HMV 101 gramophone (the tan, or grey, faux crocodile skin variant) are Fred Rich & His Orchestra (as Chester Leighton & His Sophomores) playing "Body and Soul" on electric Harmony 1226-H (150817), recorded in NYC on 9/17/30. Featured in this great band are Bunny Berigan, Tommy Dorsey, Tony Parenti, and Dick Robertson (as Chester Leighton himself!), vocal.

I'm pretty sure that sax solo is played on a C melody saxophone (larger than an Eb alto, smaller than a Bb tenor, it combines the best qualities of both in a singing upper register and a gutsy lower one). TD's trombone solo in tight cup mute lies in a difficult (even for him) high register, with uncharacteristic chipped notes and hesitations, but his famous beauty of legato tone is amply demonstrated. The arrangement is very typical of the period, that a later generation would call "square" or "mickey" (i.e., Mickey Mouse). IIRC, "Body and Soul" was published in 1930, so this recording was right up to date at the time.
