Sorry, I've been off chasing rainbows again -- just wanted to come back and thank everyone who's contributed to this discussion. I'm sold. Not because I think this particular No. 2, at least, can really sound much better, but because it really isn't worth skipping the simple maintenance of rebuilding these bad boys. I played the Six Brown Brothers' Egyptland the other night using the No. 2, and as usual, the sound was bee-yoo-tiful. But at the end, that tiny telltale smudge of black dust. Henceforth, all soundboxes that come into my hands shall be rebuilt, whether they seem fine or not. Thanks for convincing me. Hear that? My records are thanking you too.
