Request: Cleaning and Re-Lacquering Brass Parts

Hello, all!

Do any of you have suggestions on how to thoroughly clean, polish, and re-lacquer or cover these brass hinges and motor board support?

I would use a light gauge steel wool to clean the parts and get all the grime off

I thought about it, but can't help but wonder if a chemical dip solution might be better.

Just in case they're gold-plated, you might want to try ammonia first.

If they were mine, I'd try buffing with a cloth wheel and jeweler's rouge (or equivalent very fine abrasive) before I'd go chemical. A Dremel would be ideal for this work.

Hey wheres the before & after shots??

Were they gold plated??

A chemical dip is the first thing you should do. I use professional grade clock cleaner (ammoniated) only. It will not remove gold plating, but it will remove all dirt and any lacquer remaining. I recently bought a gold Improved Concert reproducer which was totally filthy. After a soak it shines beautifully.
Do not use any form of abrasive on gold plating as it will remove the gold before you realize it.
