How mother made soap

Post by celticguitar666 »

I picked this up the other day as a surprise. I thought it was quite funny Charles Case? I think I don't have it in front of me Too bad he suffered from depression and committed suicide a couple of years after he did the recording and it didn't sell well either according to info so a neat I guess kind of rare record? I will record it and post it when I have a chance maybe tonight

"How Mother Made The Soup" by Charley Case is one of my favorite Victor records as well. It is one of the relatively few early comic records that actually makes me laugh when I listen. Case had a true gift of being able to tell a funny story just perfectly. I posted a video of it on my YouTube channel and look forward to yours as well. - Doug

As I had to hunt a bit to find it, here is a direct link to Doug's post.

He allowed you to listen, think, and smile instead of yukking it up.

Mary's talent in guessing the identity of all of those lads was amazing. At first I thought that she may not have been very attractive since those boys chose to hand over a dollar instead of giving a kiss. Then I thought, oh, they were at the party with their dates. That dollar was hush-money! He begins the next segment without much pause, saying, "Now Mother was one of these women..." then a pause "...you know every body liked her..." then the clean part of the story. I'm sure he did not mean to compare Mother to Mary with his timing.

Thanks Clay. I was thinking about including it with my comments but I wonder sometimes when I do that whether anyone will care to watch it. I'm pleased that you did because I seldom watch my own videos after I post them and I'd not watched that one in quite a while :) . It always makes me smile when I hear this recording by Charley Case. His delivery timing (say a few words...pause...say some more...pause) for a story was simply outstanding. He was a very funny guy. It's a shame he passed with relatively little recognition for his work much like Vernon Dalhart and Joseph Natus who ended up in fairly dire financial circumstances after their recording careers had ended. They too passed with relatively little recognition for their work. Kind of sad...
