Should I or Shouldn't I - Edison Standard B

Post by De Soto Frank »

I keep second-guessing myself on this decision...

I have the opportunity to pick-up an Edison Standard B, S 2803xx, banner label, 2 minute-only, with a 30-inch brass horn made by the Standard Metal Manufacturing Co., Newark, NJ.

Machine is intact, but dirty; motor runs, but belt is gone. Bed-plate enamel decent, striping intact; Edison "C" reproducer (glass diaphragm) with link cord popped-loose from inside of diaphragm ( looks like the beeswax has popped loose?)

Horn is dark and rough, but not "green". No crane or stand.

I can get the lot for $300.

Is this a "safe" purchase ?

I think so. The price isn't terrible if you are satisfied with the overall cosmetics. Since I don't like refinishing cabinets, good cabinets are a high priority for me.

As long as the case is in one piece. Yes. It sounds like a good deal.

As it turned-out, my wife stopped-in to the antique shop, and asked the owner if "her husband had his eye on anything", and he mentioned the Edison Standard & horn.

So, my lovely wife bought for me as a Christmas gift ! :D

The bottom-board of the cabinet has separated where it was edge-glued, but I can repair that soem day when I have the glue-pot fired-up...

I think I will try one of the duct-tape belts, and see if it will make some noise...

Frank,
Take a few photos of before and after cleaning, so we can share in your excitement!
While you're at it, I'd love to see a photo or two of the Desotos.
Can you pm a few?
Enjoy your Standard!

I will try to do that Soon, Gene...

Having some issues with my "ancient" Canon G-1 Powershot digi-cam, and dont' really want to invest in a DSLR right now...

Might just haul-out my old Pentax Spotmatic and shoot ti on film, then scan the negs... etc...
