Hello!
I have a small but ongoing problem with the electric induction motor in my 10-35. I've torn it down completely, re-lubed and adjusted it, but very often during startup or playing the first record or two it will begin to rumble and the turntable speed will slow down. Holding the turntable manually and letting it go usually brings it to speed, and after a minute or two things will run splendidly for the rest of the time. It's obviously connected to the governor, and as things warm up the issue goes away. The same thing happens, but to a much lesser degree with my 10-50 motor-there's no slow-down with it.
Where should I focus my attention-the governor feedscrew, the friction disc or pads, the weights, or what else? Thanks!
Bob

I had the same problem with one of my Electrola Dual motors. It turned out to be the sleeve that the governors slide on as the speed accelerates. It was not only dry, but had a tiny bit of grit in it, preventing the governors sliding smoothly. I removed, cleaned and polished it, and it has been fine since.

Thanks phono48. It seems odd that after things warm up a bit that the motor runs fine. I'd cleaned the governor shaft and checked the sleeve and things seemed alright. I don't want to apply extra oil or grease needlessly if it isn't a lubrication problem. Any other thoughts? Thanks!

My 10-50 developed an occasional wobble like you descrive, more like a vibration. I finally pinned it down to a governor issue. The pad wasn't quite "true" when contacting the disc. I fiddled with it over and over until I finally got things perfect. After that, I soaked the leather pad with neatsfoot oil and it's run prefectly ever since, so there's another option for you.

Thanks Sean-
I think I'll try the neatsfoot-if that doesn't help I'll consider the pad adjustment. That'll be more of a project with the 10-35! I'll let you know how it goes.

I have known a gummy governor friction pad to cause that.

Orthophonic:
Yes, I agree a gummy pad could slow things down.
Sean:
I followed your advice regarding the neatsfoot oil, and things are working great with both the 10-35 and 10-50!
Time will tell if this is a long-term fix, but so far it's worked better than other oils I've tried.
Thanks for your help!

Re: Help needed regarding rumble in 10-35, 10-50 induction m
I'm glad! My 10-50 has been running perfectly for about 10 years since I did this to mine. An occasional oiling is all it requires now, which reminds me, I probably haven't done that in 3 or 4 years
I played the 10-50 a few days ago and it was still ticking away. One of these years I'll get around to going through my 10-35 after I haul it out of storage.
