Over the years as I have acquired phonographs, I have seen a lot of interesting homemade parts and attachments that have had to be repaired or replaced. I thought it would make an interesting thread to see what homemade parts others have encountered if you have any pictures.
I will start it off with this homemade back bracket that was on a Victrola 8-9 I acquired years ago.
Here is the before and after.

Re: Interesting homemade parts encountered on phonographs
I've found some repairs on phonos and radios that have been creative to say the least. I would imagine that most of them were either done during the WWII years when many parts and materials were in short supply, or were done by a determined DIY-er during the Great Depression who could not afford to send it out for repair or purchase factory parts him/her self. In a way, they are part of the history of a piece.

Here is a creative repair job on an old Columbia from Mexico. Still not sure if this spring barrel was modified or came this way originally.

Here's a good one this was on a changer mechanism I bought for my 10-70. Looks like someone really wanted to get to machine working.

From the worn paint on the topside it looks like it worked!rlb955 wrote:Here's a good one this was on a changer mechanism I bought for my 10-70. Looks like someone really wanted to get to machine working.

Re: Interesting homemade parts encountered on phonographs
Jerry is correct about the Columbia spring barrel, it has not been altered but came that way. I have had this type spring barrel come in on late outside horn Columbia's for repair. Both spring barrels should have been the same so it looks like the motor and barrels have already been worked on. The outside hook is the same but the inside hook for the arbor comes in two different lengths so when you order one you will need the correct length measurement. This replacement spring I have pictured came from Ron SitkoJerryVan wrote:CDBPDX wrote:Here is a creative repair job on an old Columbia from Mexico.
