Ikea Expedit line may soon be discontinued.

Post by phonophan79 »

I have one of these myself...

IKEA recently announced that they are discontinuing their Expedit line of bookshelves—at least in Germany—and the news has sparked an intense reaction among German vinyl enthusiasts.

For a generation now, Expedit has been the shelf of choice for record collectors, who don’t care to imagine life without the line. It seems to be the case that IKEA product lines are not specific to countries—if that’s true, then that probably means that IKEAs in America will also cease carrying the Expedit line soon, too.

The good news is, a unit like that wouldn't be too hard to make, though it would involve a little more work than assembling a pre-fab kit from a box.

Hmmmm...

Most of the IKEA bookcases I've seen here in the US are the usual "veneered" particle-board... I'm surprised would not bow and deflect when fully-loaded with LP's...

It's a great record / storage unit. The website gives a Max load/shelf: 13 kg (28.66 lb).

...and I have Diamond Discs in half the unit, and no problems for years now.

Target also sells a similar line. I have a 6-cube unit in my living room filled with Diamond Discs and 78s. My Edison P-1 portable sits on top.

Looked these up at ikea. Link above.
Is this big unit able to handle hundreds of albums? I'm assuming the square opening are perfect for LPs?
Looks like a sturdy construction ( I looked up the assembly sheets).

With a little simple carpentry, Ikea's "Billy" bookshelf could serve as well. Buy an extra shelf (or two) and cut it to fit upright between the horizontals. Use two or more, each aligned over the other(s), from base to top.

Yup!

Here's some images I stole from the internet showing that it can fit 12" records.

It also comes in a bigger size. (two side by side)

The unit is also mentioned and pictured a few times in this old thread:
