WANTED: Edison Cylinder With Any Song I've Heard Before

Post by igic »

Recently acquired a Triumph with a Cygnet horn, and about 20 cylinders. But I hadn't heard any of the songs before.

Do any of these cylinders have songs that anyone would know? Do you have such a cylinder that you'd like to sell?

Many thanks.

When it comes to cylinder records, most of the titles you will find, will not be a song familiar to anyone this day in age. There are a few, but they tend to be expensive. A typical cylinder record range in price for $5 to $25. Titles that are familiar, such as "Take Me Out to The Ball Game" can be upwards of $400, and its hard to find a collector willing to sell it. There are also many Christmas carols that are found on cylinders, also over $100 dollars. Also, you may find many marches you may recognize, and music such as the Star Spangled Banner, which will be about $25 to $50. It all depends what you're interested in. If you had a list of titles you know, and are interested in, it will be much easier for some one to come forward and offer it to you. :D

It sounds like you're new to this hobby, if so, then most of it will be new to your ears. You also may find that many songs you hear are hard to like. There is a bright side, with plenty of band music, classical and even popular songs, you should find music for your ears.

Go here and poke around a bit. At least then you'll be able to place Wanted ad in our Yankee Trader section with song titles that you like.

Have fun looking,
James

PS - I was assuming that your Triumph only plays 2 minute cylinders. If you have a Model D, then your listening pleasure opens up by 20 years with the inclusion of 4 minute Amberols.

Thanks, James. I've collected Marx Brothers memorabilia for decades, so I know more old songs that lots of people. But I much appreciate the information you've given me.

I did obtain a 2 AND 4 minute Triumph with both the "C" and "H" reproducers, so I'm hoping something comes along soon.

If anyone has "Stars and Stripes Forever," I'd be MOST interested.

Don't think I want to fork over $400 for "Take Me Out to the BallGame," as much of a baseball fan as I am.

Thanks again.

Scott

Scott,

Having a 2 and 4 minute machine will definitely open up to you a much wider range of music. Many 4 minute records you come by will probably have titles more typical of those you will recognize. Stars and Stripes Forever is a very popular title, that is not very expensive. I would suggest creating a new wanted ad. People will be more likely to see that than they will to read this topic and see you decided on a record.

Welcome to the hobby!

Scott,

I just received my latest copy of, "The Antique Phonograph", from the Antique Phonograph Society. Listed in the back were approx. 3 companies that make new 2 & 4 minute cylinder records. Some with popular titles of long ago, such as Take Me Out to the Ballgame, and others offering to record virtually any title of your choosing. It sounds like this might suit you.

If you're not already an APS member it might be a good idea to join. Otherwise, or until then, maybe some others can give you the contact info for these new record sources.

I might also add that I understand your desire to hear familiar music. Consider however, that listening to old music will widen your musical "vocabulary" and maybe introduce some new sounds that you didn't even realize you liked because you've never heard them before.

No question, Jerry. I just wanted one cylinder with something a bit more popular.
Many thanks.

You may also not be aware that cylinder records are still being made. There are companies like Borri Audio Laboratories, Richards Laboratories, and Paul Morris who make new blanks so you can make your own cylinder recordings. There are also services that have commissioned, or make there own plastic cylinders, like Wizard, Edisonia and Vulcan. And those that offer custom recordings, like The Victrola Guy, and myself, although I am more interested in selling blanks than making recordings.
