Real or Fake...? German made export model?

Post by Joe_DS »

Never seen one quite like this, but it's similar in design to the deluxe teak HMV export models.

Seeing the tonearm on the wrong side of the record doesn't do anything to enhance the seller's credibility.

The only components I recognise as HMV are the lock, the Tungstyle clip and possibly the turntable.

The carrying handle may be a "Pakawa" as used by HMV, but if so it has been drilled and screwed into the case instead of being secured by tabs.

The lid stay could be from an HMV101, but if so it has been reverse mounted.

The machine could well be of Indian origin, but my guess is that it is the work of an enthusiastic amateur. I wouldn't touch it!

Many thanks. I sorta' had a feeling it might not be genuine, but I wasn't sure.

I reckon it IS genuine but a genuine "what", I couldn't possibly say! I certainly don't think it was made by an amateur.

I'd say it was made by a good woodworking shop using the mechanism of a quality portable and has some value, but not $400.

Ahhh, India, the home of the crap-o-phone. There are some genuine HMV machines, but most of them are made up.
