Victor VI. Is this a good buy? (pics)

Post by gaspar »

Hi everyone! I´m Gaspar from Buenos Aires, Argentina and this is my very first post in this forum. Gramophones, vitrolas and phonographs are also new to me.
I have found a Victor VI for sale locally and I need your help. Is this a good buy? From the pics I see that the horn has maybe been refinished.
Please let me know what you think. Thanks a lot! Here are the pics:

Hi Gaspar, and welcome.

Victor VIs are highly desirable machines. It does look like someone has unfortunately applied gold paint to portions of the horn, so that would likely reduce the value a little. I don't know how difficult that would be to remove.

Hello Gaspar,

Welcome to the Forum. The Vic VI is a very desirable model and the one in question appears quite nice. On a completely original machine the mahogany horn would not have the gold highlights. Also, the turntable felt should be green. It's difficult to answer if it's a good buy because you don't mention an asking price. I would expect the asking price to be between $3500 and $5500 here. Jerry and Clay thank you so much for your fast responses. The asking price is US$1.200 (a bargain I suppose?)
I think I will buy it and get that horn properly restored. The gold painting should be easy to remove right?. I have a great luthier who always repair my vintage mahogany ukuleles so this can´t be a very different job.

Thank you so much! :)

Yes, if it all checks out and is what it appears to be, I would consider that a very nice bargain indeed! And you are fortunate to have a trusted restorer at hand. Post some "after" pictures when it is all done.

Hi Gaspar and welcome to the forum.
US$1,200 would be a great deal in North America. I would have grabbed it right away.
Have your buddy redo the horn as it should and you will have a very nice machine and a very nice price.
Good luck and please post a couple pictures when it's done.

And, hence, all the flights to Argentina are now booked solid.

I paid $1200 for this one a few months ago and I'd buy more at that price. Jerry
