Who knows, it could have been done 70 years ago when it just made sense to have something more portable and it wasn't worth anything anyway. Or maybe the lower half got destroyed in a flooded basement.

What Jerry said. All we could do at this stage is speculate.
I have the bottom half of an oak Columbia F2, bought for very little, that I use as an end table. Somebody sawed off the section where the mechanism and the horn go and then moved the lid down to cover the record storage portion. Sort of like taking in an invalid relative to save from further harm. The seller said they had bought it that way years ago at an antique shop. They had no idea what it really was. The record ejecting storage system is still in the bottom.

Maybe it was in a flooded basement and the lower portion was badly water damaged ??
