Multiphone 24 cylinder (jukebox) phonograph!!!!!!!

Post by Dustie89 »

I'm seeking more information on a 24 cylinder coin-op phonograph, early jukebox. I've seen two different models, one more rounded without a visible horn, and one I'm seeking more information on is rectangular in overall shape with a horn coming out of the top. A value and estimate of machines that still may exist. Consider condition as mint/ restored. Thanks any information would be helpful.

At auction the lyre-shaped Multiphones have been fetching around $75,000 when in good condition. Some retailers of musical antiques are able to command considerably more for this model, due to it's rarity and their excellent reputations for customer service. To my knowledge there has been only one of the "china cabinet" style Multiphones offered for sale in recent years. As I recall it sold for about the same price as the lyre-shaped model despite its even greater rarity. Perhaps this is because it is somewhat less visually imposing. Perhaps it's extreme rarity has simply not allowed a definite market value to develop for this model. Perhaps it is just the vagaries of the auction market. Who knows?

Sometimes rarity doesn't translate into higher value - with the Multiphone the visual interest is the big thing.

This style of Multiphone is called the "Square Cased Multiphone". I have restored six of the eight that I have seen. I am aware of two others. It is estimated that there are n more than 15 of them around. The last I saw sold was about a year ago and it went for $75K after commissions. Here is a picture of three of them while they were being restored.
