An EMG Plays an Edison Diamond Disc

Post by OrthoSean »

I recently bought an adapter to play Edison Diamond Discs using a rebuilt Ultona reproducer on my EMG. I finally got around to making a video of it today, sorry for the camera mic, but it's all I have. The camera was about 12 feet from the horn to give you an idea of the sheer volume this puts out! Thanks to our own emgcr for making this adapter available!

I cannot believe how loud and clear that sounds!

Outstanding!

It's electric. Here's an acoustic one I just did in haste for comparison purposes, don't mind the hound dog whining part way in!

Beautiful! The sound is very good from both of these records, though I do prefer the second song. It makes me wish I had a good stylus again.

I always like well-recorded acoustic discs of all sorts. Not because they are better than electric ones, just that they are more interesting to demonstrate to non-collectors. "They recorded that without a microphone!?!"

Although they are both good, the acoustic record sounds much better on that machine. Like Velveeta vs. real aged Cheddar.

Sounding wonderful! I too have one of Graham's adaptors, and am waiting for the right Ultona unit to buy - looking forward to the results.

Well done Sean---sounds great I think. Are you pleased with the result ?

Which solution to the spindle height problem did you use ? Did the suggestion of including washers to lower the turntable height produce the right answer ?

Pleased isn't a good enough word! I'm beyond pleased with everything. Graham, I ended up using neoprene washers from my local hardware store. Not only did they help get everything on the correct level, but any electrical motor noise or vibrations are now so nicely isolated that you can't een hear the motor running when you're standing right at the machine. I will post some more videos here eventually when I have time, what sounds really astounding with this setup are the early embossed "transfer" Diamond Discs.

Well, the 'transfer' DDs are pretty spectacular in any case… :)
