Victor RE 45 pick up rebuild phono is weak but now strong!

Post by celticguitar666 »

Hello I believe my pick up is in need of a rebuild. I have seen the name Epple (spelling?) come up a few places I shot him an email and I haven't heard back i don't know how long his response time is so I may hear back in a day or 2?. I know he suppose to be the man but is he still doing it? Any other re builders any one can recommend? The radio section has plenty of volume and sounds great but the phono section is weak. I did some research and the volts one place said 2-3 another said 6-8 I am getting with my digital meter 1.3-1.8 volts so either way it's weak I haven't checked the ohms yet as I just found out it's value 200 ohms or was 200k anyway it's a lovely machine and man is it heavy!
any suggestions welcomed. I would attempt it myself but I have no way of recharging the magnet
Thanks again to the person I got the machine from! much appreciated!

George Epple is the best. I've used him many times. His email is [email protected]

Thanks for the response That is what I have read I heard back from him this morning he gave a couple of hints on what to check and his price which appears reasonable for what it is . I have entered a new realm one that strides between the acoustic and the electric for Victor but it is a nice machine makes one wonder what they would have come up with if they weren't absorbed by RCA
Cheers

George is very patient fellow and very helpful so it was decided coil in pickup is either wrong or bad so off it went today to be rebuilt I have to be content now to listen to mp3's through the phono section Django sound great through the machine neat very period correct music I can't wait the hear the phonograph when it gets back Yeah very nice unit RE45 are underrated machines looks great in great room next to A150 but I have to rearrange it more to be perfect

200 Ohms is correct, in fact mine is only around 90 Ohms. These reproducers are really easy to rebuild if they are not open coil, which is sounds like yours wasn’t. One big key to really getting a big sound is to recharge the magnet. That is a little harder to do unless you have the equipment or know some old car guys (Model T).

I would also check the phonograph volume control and make sure it’s still good and not broken and prematurely dropping sound to ground. The Pot on the RE-45 should be 500 Ohm. Another point to check is where it plugs into the micro-synchronous radio. My radio/phono selector switch needed the contacts cleaned.

I too have a victor re-45 but have not gotten the time to work on it. Did you polish the finish and if so with what? And did you send it out or fix it yourself?

George did the pickup on my Edison C-4, I was very pleased with it, and very nice guy to work with too.

[thead][/thead]The electronics were redone before I got it all the caps were replaced. I used lemon oil wax combo and it perked the finish to a point I am satisfied with how it looks once I get fully up and operational I may do it a further bit it looks nice right now. I cleaned all the contacts on the circuit with contact cleaner emery clothe and adjusted the phono /radio switch blades. George and I exchanged photos and the pickup coil didn't look right so he is going check it out but it will probably be replaced. So right now John McCormack is on deck and sounds great (MP3)

You would have to email him for a quote
mine needed more so it cost more not a fair comparison but it was still an excellent price
really nice guy from my correspondences
