Bad Ebay seller warning

Post by Torjazzer »

The name is "CHRIS59177" from France.
Mails a 78 from France to Canada, using a cardboard envelope without padding. The record arrived today broken. Seller blames the rough handling of the post office!

Ouch. Sorry to see that happened to you.

They should make all sellers pass an exam on how to properly pack any type of item before they are allowed to sell items that need to be shipped. If he packed a record this way, you have to wonder how he would handle a porcelain vase

Unfortunately, this is a very common occurrence. Over the years, and after a number of events like this, I have restricted my purchases to professional record dealers, who know how to pack 78s. In the rare cases when I buy from a non specialized seller, I send detailed instructions on how to pack, but even in such cases it is far from sure that the seller will understand the instructions and be able (or willing) to pack properly.

My recommendation is that instead of naming the poor packers, that the good packers be identified. It will be a much smaller list...

I see your point. However, packing well is what they're supposed to do. It's what we pay them to do well when we are charged shipping and handling. We expect that when packing a brittle item, adequate materials are care are used, especially when sending items overseas. The negligence cited here deserves special attention; the offending party named. I will continue to do so. Having said that, I should give a special mention to "ROBBOMAC" of Ebay whose packing is stellar and should be used as a possitive example for all.

I have had amazingly good luck, I guess. I have bought records from a number of different eBay sellers and all but one were pretty well packed and arrived safely. There, on the advice of some clueless postal clerk, an elderly lady had mailed a 78 in one of those thin post office priority mail pasteboard envelopes with the inevitable result.

I've been fortunate in that most of the Ebay sellers from whom I've purchased records over the years know how to package discs and cylinders.

I've cut back on my record buying over the past several years. However I continue to get records from Ebay seller Nickjay78. Darrell is a great person and a great Ebay seller. Every shipment arrives safely. And Darrell also appreciates my wacky sense of humor--I leave some pretty outlandish positive feedback, such as "I've been buying records from Darrell since 1898" or "I buy my records from the Darrell Phonograph Company of Seattle."

That happened to me once when I bought a record and it came in a non padded paper envelope, which was a shame because I really wanted the record at the time.

I swear that some people think that these things are carried around on a bed of roses!

Yes, I live in SoCal, & received a BAA cylinder from NY. It was without the cardboard tube &
put into a plain manilla envelope! Naturally, it arrived crushed; so was I....it was a great title!

What's the brand, artist and song title? I'll see if I have one and I'll send it to you at no cost, as long as you don't live outside of the USA.
