Thanks Bill. Just did't want to ruin a stylus or cylinder.

Ok, Bill!Lucius1958 wrote:The Columbia 'Lyric' reproducers are also fine for the 2 minute cylinders ... There may be some issues with tracking, as the Indestructibles seem to be more vulnerable to shrinkage than the Blue Amberols...
I'm going to obtain a Columbia BK with a Lyric reproducer; it can play only 2m cylinder, if I've understood at the best. Are there some cares that I must have with particular kinds of cylinder? I.e., should I avoid using brown wax cylinder, or not? ...black wax ( = gold moulded?), or not? ...indestructibles, or not? I'm very confused because I'm absolutely not aware of these slight knowledges.

In other words, which kind of cylinders are "compatible" with this phonograph/reproducer?
Thank you!

Here's an article that should answer all your questions. The different types of cylinders and the proper reproducers for playing each type are illustrated in clear, full-color images. Scroll down about ⅓ of the way for the cylinder record/machine pointers:

Nice representation of machine types and eras. You're covering maximum ground with minimal outlay and space requirements!

Re: Correct reproducers for playing cylinders?
Definitely a good start!
All you need is something that will play 4 minute cylinders (if you can find them), and something for vertical discs (including Diamond Discs, if you can find any)….

Thank you, friends!
And mow for another question/debate: I feel Lyric reproducer on my Columbia is too loud. Is this a common feature/problem?
See you later...

Is there much distortion with it?doublemike wrote:Thank you, friends!

After all, I believe the Lyric reproducers were designed to deliver greater volume than the earlier 'floating' reproducers (and, perhaps, the Edison reproducers of the time). I know I was impressed the first time I heard a Lyric - I'll have to hear how my BF sounds compared to the Edison, once I get everything back…
Anyway, you can always 'put a sock in it' if you want to lower the volume….

A side note. I picked up a Triumph with a Model O reproducer on eBay yesterday and this thread answered questions about what to play on it I was about to ask.
