Making shellac 78's in the 21st Century ?

Never happen in any significant way unless whoever was doing it wanted to lose money. Collectors often talk the talk more than they actually walk.

It might not be either "fair" or "polite" to ask folks like Shawn Borri if they're "making money" by recreating Edison cylinder records and blanks...

Whatever their business model, I'm just glad folks have an interest and are doing it !

Very interesting topic!

20 years ago, everyone said that Vinyl was dead, now, many modern artists are using the media again. My point being, "anything's possible"!

Hey they do re releases of stuff on 45 rpm vinyl for better sonics wider groove etc. Imagine the sonics of new Shellac! at 78 rpm the higher the speed the better the fidelity look at RTR tape 7 ½ blows the doors off of 3 ¼ right? so imagine 15 ips sort of the 78 rpm of tape(?) so 78 would sound better weeeee

Modern hi fidelity shellac 78's wouldn't be suitable for antique machines (wear too quickly - stress the reproducer which will not reproduce a lot of the sonic content anyway) or be much point on modern kit (for the surface noise.) But hi-fi vinyl 78's can sound very good indeed.

In the UK we had a bit of a winding path in the late 1950's change over from 78's to 33 and 45 rpm records in terms of materials and so there were a number of 78's that were pressed in vinyl and I can honestly say that they donn't sound significantly different to a normal 45rpm disk. The only advantage being that they were much lighter and also unbreakable. Was the UK the only place to have these?

Vinyl 78's were pressed in America and elsewhere from the 1940's and beyond.

45 rpm records from the 1950's don't always sound that great because they rolled off the bass and cutting levels to avoid mistracking on cheap players. The equivalent 78 wasn't beset with these ills, and sometimes they're cut so loud that they overmodulate. But given the choice between a vintage 45 or 78, I might choose the 78, except for that shellac noise. Could be a toss-up.
