Hey Guys -
Seller lists the player as broken, but if he's selling the player and cabinet for $50... who knows what's wrong with it. It looks in decent cosmetic condition.

Is the record cabinet actually that, or an upright falled victim to a saw? I'm guessing the later.
I'm also guessing the tonearm is brken at the base. They're often broken were the arm attaches to the base due to the design & use of pot metal.
If you ever buy an Aeolian Vocalion, always remove the arm before transporting them.

Hrmm, I hadn't considered that looking at the picture. Did Aeolian Vocalion make a tabletop?gramophoneshane wrote:Is the record cabinet actually that, or an upright falled victim to a saw? I'm guessing the later.

I believe that it is a hack job.
Funny thing is, I have a complete floor cabinet with tone arm and reproducer, only missing the motor, motorboard, and platter.
I doubt the seller would take it apart and ship what I need for me, let alone for the price.
Any fellow board members nearby that would proxy for me?

I don't think it's a hack job- on an upright you'd see the opening for the Graduola next to the grille, plus there's a nice molding around the base: if it's a nack job it's nicely done. The base cabinet is probably like one I have- wide so that 12 inch albums can be stored on their sides.

They sure did. I'd say the one on craigslist is either a pre-1916 model, or it's their cheapest table model without the graduola.phonophan79 wrote:Hrmm, I hadn't considered that looking at the picture. I still have my doubts about the record cabinet. With the carved feet & apron, and the way the uprights flare out at the top, it just looks to me as though it was an upright.
It would probably be a good size for an Edison DD table model though.

Thanks for such a generous offer! After looking at the picture of the table top machine and comparing it to my cabinet (below) the grilles are different and the surrounding elements of the cabinet are different suggesting that it is likely that the motor board may be different.
Also, I would not feel right about taking one whole machine apart just to build up another.
Again, thank you for the offer. I just couldn't ask you to take your time to look at something that is not likely to pan out.

That is without the remote Volume Control the exact machine my Great Grandfather had which my Grandmother played when I was young. His was on a much more fitting matching base with record storage. It was most likely also made for Aeolian as it fit and matched perfectly. I didn't realize it was a table top type machine on a base until after she had given it away when a cousin broke the spring the first time he wound it.. Broke my heart, it was the first machine I ever heard. Lots of records of the Glow worm, Sweet Bunch of Daisies and Under the Double Eagle march heard for the first time.. Its what gave me my start for sure. A friend now has an oak model that is wonderful but somewhat smaller in scale than this one, its really a beauty and works great.. Wish I had one.

Shane,
Thanks for posting the picture of the tabletop version. One thing that strikes my curiosity, though—how exactly does the remote volume control work on these machines? Does turning the knob on it turn some connected part of the machine (e.g. attached to louvers, etc.)?
