These crates, as well as the one that started this thread, look like they were exposed to dampness for a long time, which does not bode well for their content.

Another shot of the crated S-19 at Union in 2010, along with price and George's article on top. That Cygnet horn is still up there, as well!

How were the crates constructed? The solid sides almost look like cardboard ?

Very thin plywood, 3-ply, glued together with hide glue. It's the same stuff you often find for case bottoms and back panels. Once the glue softens with age and dampness the cheap wood shrinks and swells like crazy-- I have a delaminated case bottom and the pieces have shrunk as much as a half inch.

I haven't seen one "up close and personal" but I'm guessing plywood.De Soto Frank wrote:How were the crates constructed? The solid sides almost look like cardboard ?

Wow- I lived in the Akron area in the 1970s/ 80s and I knew the Kratz family... Worked in retail with Janice and her elderly mom was still running the music store in the late 1970s. Very eccentric but nice people.coyote wrote:Another shot of the crated S-19 at Union in 2010, along with price and George's article on top. That Cygnet horn is still up there, as well!
