Amberola 30 - DX etc. grille cloth

Post by briankeith »

Is there a good (reproduction) supplier for the tan/brown Edison Amberola grille cloth that was used on some machines with the black horn? I understand that the models with faux wood-grain painted horns did not use any gille cloth, but machines with the plain black painted horns had grille cloth glued to the back of the faux wood grained metal gilles? Looking for a decent color and material match. I have always wondered about these Amberola metal grilles - cloth or no cloth

Brian,

The D-X did not come with cloth on the grille. As for the 30's, Frow states that the early models had "...silk-covered grilles.", if that helps you any.

I purchased a grille from Ladanjus at eBAY for my D-X. He (Justin) graciously removed the cloth from one of his stock and even knocked $3 off for me. Here's a link to his eBAY store:

The faux grain is very nice, as is the steel that was used to make it. Very sturdy! I couldn't be happier. If you want to see it, George P. did a photo shoot last week with his VIII for comparative analysis here is a link to that post:

Here is what I use for grille cloth for the Amberola 30, 50(Oak), 75 (Oak). I use coffee colored or tan pantyhose!!  I know this may sound silly, but it is the right consistency and feels almost like silk. An old time collector told me this trick, when I first stating to collect. You can get pantyhose in just about any color. I get a few stares when I buy this stuff, and it's hard to keep a straight face when purchasing. Anyway Phonographs prevail over embarrassment!!

Harvey,

What a great idea! I'm going to put that one in the "ole cardfile"! :)

Harvey,
Thanks for the great pantyhose trick ! I have always felt that the material that I use is too heavy and blocks sound; it is a synthetic silk look alike. Mike

So then,,, the models with faux-wood grained painted metal horns that sorta matched the cabinets finish did not use or require any grille cloth what-so-ever ??

To the best of my knowledge, the early Diamond Disk and early Amberola phonographs with the grained horn, did not use grille cloth. Hope this helps.
