Meteor Phonograph Autobrake Question
A friend sent pics of his Meteor autobrake and is having trouble figuring out how it works... anyone have any experience with these?

I've never seen this particular brake before, but judging from the mechanical set-up and those little tension springs here and there, I would describe the function of this style brake as "wind and trip", or "cock and trip".
Releasing the brake to start the turn-table tensions the springs, and engages a trigger-latch which keeps the brake "off", until the pin on the taper-tube contacts that long trip-lever, which releases the trigger-latch, and the brake engages on spring tension.
Some penetrating oil on all the pivots / sliding surfaces, and some careful manipulation will probably reveal its specific operation.

I have variation of the same thing in a Portophone from Dayton Ohio. I don't know what the other lever on your Meteor is for but it might start and stop it without setting the automatic.

- Pulling the knob rotates the disc clockwise and the short end of the long arm catches in the notch holding the rubber stop away.

- When the tone arm touches the end of the long arm the other end moves out of the notch and the disc rotates counterclockwise bringing the rubber stop against the turntable.
