Silvertone help

Post by jimmantwo »

I have a friend who has this machine. I don't know much about Silvertones but would like to repair it's motor. There is some play at the winding gear and it is slipping during winding. Before I take it apart I wanted to post a couple pictures. It looks like if I simply add a washer between the motor housing and the adjacent gear to take out the play it would solve the issue. The pictures show the gears aligned and unaligned.

It appears that there is a red or brown fibre washer in there; I don't think it harm anything to add another fibre or brass washer (or two) to shim the small pinion over towards the barrel. Just leave a tiny bit of lash so there's no binding, somewhere between 0.002-0.005".

The gears look worn.

I agree with Howard..the gear looks a little eaten up..try to locate a new gear and that much play could be acceptable. But first..dont be shy..tear it all down..you never know if something is just not sitting right.
